We investigate the relevance of induration as an explanation for the occurrence of dunes of unusual morphology in the Martian north polar region. The evidence for induration of aeolian deposits on Mars is reviewed. An explanation for rounded, elongated barchans in Chasma Boreale is presented. The role played by induration in the formation of linear dunes is discussed. Our arguments are supported by the results of a computer simulation model. |
