Kamide, Y. (2006). What is an "Intense Geomagnetic Storm"?. Space Weather 4. doi: 10.1029/2006SW000248. issn: 1542-7390.

The main objective of space weather research is to trace the flow of energy from the Sun to the Earth's upper atmosphere. Large changes in the energy input at Earth can seriously affect many technologies. Scientists customarily assume that the best indicator of the intensity of a geomagnetic storm is the minimum value of the Dst index, the longitudinal average of the horizontal component of Earth's low-latitude surface magnetic field.
