The spatial and temporal distributions of thermal instability and vertical wind shear in the Indian subcontinent are evaluated as the important factors for occurrence and development of severe local storms and compared with the climatology of severe local storms across the Indian subcontinent. High thermal instability and vertical wind shear occur in Bangladesh and northeastern India during the pre-monsoon season (from March to May), peaking in April. There is great potential for severe local storms during the pre-monsoon season in Bangladesh and northeastern India.
