We present the first observations of the OI 989¿ (2p4 3P-3s'3D¿) emission in the tropical nightglow. The morphology and origin of the emission are discussed. Dielectronic recombination of 0+ is suggested as the mechanism responsible for populating the 3s'3D¿ state.
