I note with interest the discussion by J¿rgensen and Rasmussen<2006> on Adam Paulsen's work in the late nineteenth century. To understand why this work was notfully appreciated at the time it was beingconducted, it should be realized that theemphasis then was on such topics as therelationship between aurora and solaractivity, their geographic distribution, andspectroscopic studies such as those byHermann Karl Vogel and Johann KarlFriedrich Z¿llner on the red auroral line. The problem of cathode rays and relatedmatters was also being discussed widely, for example, by Eugen Goldstein and EmilWiechert. |
