The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has deployed the first of two Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunami (DART) buoys in the Indian Ocean. This first buoy was placed about halfway between Thailand and Sri Lanka at the beginning of December 2006 and will be maintained by the Thai Meteorological Department and National Disaster Warning Center.
