Arsenic contaminates the well water used by millions of Bangladeshis (see Eos 87(3), 2006). Now, the developer of a household treatment system that removes arsenic from water will receive the 2007 Grainger Challenger Prize Gold Award, the U.S. National Academy of Engineering announced on 1 February. Abul Hussam, of George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., developed a filter system, known as the SONO filter, which is manufactured and used in his native Bangladesh.
