Report Day 08 -- Thursday 08 October 2009 -- It's all about the Cranes

From left to right: CTD, Medea's,
Jason's, and the elevator/lights crane

I wake up early, walk out on the deck and begin to snap pictures. I am on the stern of the boat and snap photos from starboard to port. The first crane (the white one) is used to lower and raise the CTD. The second crane called an A-frame (the curved green one) is used to lower and raise Medea into the ocean. The third crane belongs solely to Jason (the small turquoise one). The fourth crane is used to raise and lower the elevator and hold the floodlights as Jason is raised or lowered in the dark (the big green arm).

Seatel Internet Ball

As I continue to pan to the right I see more curious objects on the boat. I ask around to find out what they are. First, there’s a big white ball. It turns out that’s how we receive our (very intermittent) internet service. It was installed only 3 years ago. Prior to that, there was no internet.

Next, on the very top of the boat, I see two radar antennas, a small one and a large one. The antennas enable the bridge to monitor the location of other ships in the area.

The more I look around the ship the more impressed I am with all of the equipment. The longer I am on board, the more sense it all makes. I decide to interview the captain and the crew in the upcoming days to find up more about the R/V Kilo Moana.

Jason will go back down at midnight tonight – just in time for my shift in the monitor room to begin.
