Description
Interpretation of magnetic anomaly data. This diagram shows idealized magnetization of the ocean floor (block diagram), and an age interpretation of these magnetic stripes in the top panel. The green profile reflects the actual measured magnetic profile from an oceanographic survey and the blue line shows the magnetic profile that is predicted from calculations based on the local (bar-magnet) field and the expected magnetization of the oceanic crust. Note that they are very similar which confirms that the theory closely matches nature. |
