Description
This diagram shows the inside of the earth and the processes involved in hotspot formation. Partially melted rock moves up through earth's layers (including the crust) by the process of convection until it reaches the surface, cools and forms a hotspot volcano. Convection is a process by which warmer deeper mantle material is pushed upward because it is less dense than sinking colder mantle material closer to the surface. This is how the Hawaiian Islands were formed and are continuing to form today.
