Description
This image provides density values and physical properties for the different mantle layers. The lithosphere is the solid, strong, and rigid outer layer of the Earth, consisting of the crust and uppermost part of the mantle. This region is composed of the material that tectonic plates are made of. The asthenosphere lies underneath, where the temperature and pressure allows for the material to be partially melt. This causes the material to lose strength and become soft and plastic, flowing slowly. The tectonic plates of the lithosphere float on the asthenosphere, causing plate motion to occur. The boundary between the lithosphere and the asthenosphere is mechanically distinct (not chemical) due to the change from solid to a more fluidic material. Below the asthenosphere the pressure increases enough to form a more rigid and stronger region known as the mesosphere. The mesosphere is the bottom layer of the mantle, extending down to the core. |
