Description
This is a segment of the overall chart of the nuclides showing most of the stable and unstable isotopes of Calcium, Potassium, Argon and Chlorine. These are the nuclides that participate in the nuclear reactions with neutrons when geological materials are being irradiated for 40Ar/39Ar age dating. From this chart it is clear that 39Ar is not the only unstable isotope with a mass similar to the five possible isotopes of this noble gas. Many of these unnatural isotopes are produced at the same time as 39Ar is produced from 39K and need to be taken into account when preforming the 40Ar/39Ar measurements. However, most of these interferences can be corrected for very accurately or they are negligible. |
