Sato, N. and Matsudo, T. (1986). Origin of magnetic pulsations associated with regular period VLF pulsations (Type 2 QP) observed on the ground at Syowa station. Journal of Geophysical Research 91: doi: 10.1029/JA080i010p11179. issn: 0148-0227.

Type 2 quasi-periodic (QP) VLF emissions with fairly regular-period pulsations sometimes show good coherency with the H component of magnetic pulsations. From the relative-phase analysis between QP emissions and magnetic pulsations, it is found that the relative phases are independent of the pulsation periods. It is suggested that the magnetic pulsations observed on the ground are generated in the ionosphere. The quasi-periodic precipitating electron fluxes induced by quasi-periodic VLF emissions modify the ionospheric conductivity. The quasi-periodic enhancement of the conductivity in the ionospheric D and E regions would modify the Spq current flows in the ionosphere, resulting in the magnetic variations observed on the ground.
