It is conjectured that tidal phase lags around large bays and gulfs can be explained in terms of simple harmonic shelf waves propagating around a constant depth circular region. The Joseph Bonaparte Gulf is considered as an example, and the observed phase trends are shown to be well correlated with those predicted for a circular gulf with a radius of 190 km and a depth of 80 m.
