Likely mechanisms for bubble generation and persistence in the ocean are discussed. It is suggested that the larger bubbles (radius>60 μm) may be generated continuously by decaying matter on the sea floor, but that smaller ones (radius<60○) persist indefinitely, once formed, because of surfactant coating and attachment to particles. Simple mathematical models for these hypotheses are constructed and found to compare favorably with the data of Medwin (1970).
