The effect of surface heat flux on the possibility of self-similar solutions in a wind-driven turbulent layer penetrating into a stratified fluid has been examined. It has been found that approximately similar solutions are possible if the initial stratification is depth independent. Similarity requires t<tQ, where the 'heating time scale' tQ is typically a few days. A relation has been derived for the surface layer depth h(t) and compared wih numerical calculations.
