Musman, S. (1986). Sea slope changes associated with westward propagating equatorial temperature fluctuations. Journal of Geophysical Research 91: doi: 10.1029/JC091iC09p10753. issn: 0148-0227.

At five locations in the eastern equatorial Pacific between 113 ¿W and 130 ¿W, both sea height and temperature fluctuations were observed during the repeated ground track phase of the Seasat mission. A fluctuation of 1.6¿0.6 cm/deg latitude in the smoothed sea slope between 2 ¿N and 4 ¿N is associated with the passage of two temperature disturbances. The corresponding sea height fluctuation of 1.0¿0.9 cm is not statistically significant. The sea slope estimate, together with kinematic assumptions about velocities, provides an approximate evaluation of the principal contributions to the meridional momentum balance in the propagating wave.
