The effect of a well-mixed atmosphere in a global carbon cycle model on the absorptive rate for excess CO2 by the ocean is investigated. It is found that Model I, in which the atmosphere is represented by a well-mixed box, tends to overestimate the amount of carbon absorbed by the ocean, compared to Model II in which the atmosphere is more realistically represented by a two-dimensional advective diffusive model.
